Bastei a spectacular rock formations towering up to about 194 m above the river in the valley of the Elbe, Saxon Switzerland in Germany.
Reaching a height 305 meters above sea level, jagged rocks Bastei formed by water erosion over one million years ago. They are situated near Rathen and Niederrathen, far from Pirna, southeast of the city of Dresden and the main landmarks in the National Park Saxon Switzerland. They are also part of the target area and hiking, which extends across the border into the Czech Republic and Czech Switzerland.
Bastei become a tourist attraction over 200 years. In 1824 r. was built for visitors to the wooden bridge, combining several rocks. This bridge was replaced in 1851 year by the currently existing bridge of sandstone.
Rocks and views from Bastei have inspired many famous artists, Caspar David Friedrich wśród Nich (“Rock canyon”).
Spa town of Rathen is the main base for exploring Bastei. To the city can be reached from Dresden steamboat traveling on the river Elbe.
Another famous landmark in the area is a stronghold Königstein.
