The castle is located on the border between the Czech Republic and Poland. It was rebuilt into a Renaissance chateau at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries from a Gothic castle founded in the mid-13th century. It gained its present architectural appearance during the reconstruction and modification of the interior in the 17th and 18th centuries. The most important owners of Náchod were Smiřičtí of Smiřice, the Italian Piccolomini family, Kuronští and the German princely family of Schaumburg-Lippe.
