Rotunda in Zamosc, the place of execution in the years of occupation

Construction on a circular fortress built in the years 1825-1831. It was built on an island surrounded by marshes and backwaters located 500 meters from the fortress walls, site, which already existed in the eighteenth century earthwork defending south of Zamosc. The outer diameter of the circle on which the plan is built Rotunda 54 meters, while the diameter of the inner courtyard – 34 meters. The height of the external walls of buildings reached 10 meters. Around the courtyard was 20 radially arranged goal with loopholes, open arcade of the courtyard. Communication with the city assured the road, protected by dikes and a moat. After the liquidation of the fortress in 1866 was walled up inside the arcade, and the building was turned into a weapons and ammunition. This building served the function 1939 year.
During World War II, the Germans turned Rotunda in place of mass murder. In 1939 was held in the individual executions, but from the 1940 was murdered several dozen people a day. This involved the creation of a transit camp by the Germans and the action indicated by the code name ?A-B?, the aim of which was the murder of the Polish intelligentsia. Since November 1942 the executions took on a mass character in connection with the action of deportation led to Zamosc. Since then, for the purposes of the Rotunda in inhumane conditions after dozens of people were imprisoned. She waited for them to execution or transportation to other camps. Initially, the victims were buried around the Rotunda. At the end of the war, to erase the traces of genocide dug earlier buried corpse and burned at the stake in the middle of an heir. Estimated, that from 1940 year in the Rotunda were imprisoned 40000 people, whereof 8000 were murdered.
